About Dr. Bharat Gupt

Padma Shri Bharat Gupt, honored with one of India’s highest civilian awards in 2025, is a distinguished figure in the Indian art and cultural landscape. In 2023, he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award from the President of India for his outstanding contributions to musicology.

A multifaceted personality, Dr. Gupt is an Indian classicist, theatre theorist, sitar and surbahar player, musicologist, cultural analyst, and newspaper columnist. His academic journey spans both Western and traditional Indian educational systems, which equips him to build deep cross-cultural connections in the realm of arts and ideas.

He is the recipient of the McLuhan Fellowship from the University of Toronto and the Senior Onassis Fellowship for research in classical Greek theatre in Greece. His work has been widely acknowledged through lectures at prestigious institutions across India, North America, Europe, and Greece.

Dr. Gupt has served as a Visiting Professor in Greece and was a jury member for the Onassis Award for Drama. In India, he currently holds the position of Vice Chairman at the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi, and is a resource scholar at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA). He is also known for his annual public lectures at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, and other cultural forums.
